Lolita
my notes (Part One): 1 2
-------
honey-colored skin
a little ghost in natural colors (and this is how I see Lolita).
★ 精灵 is too cute to be Lolita (or just nice, or "cute," or even "sweet" and "attractive," ordinary, plumpish, formless, cold-skinned, essentially human little girls)
(born Vanessa van Ness)
缺。
★ vanessa, van ness, word play?
Our brains were turned the way those of intelligent European preadolescents were in our day and set, and I doubt if much individual genius should be assigned to our interest in the plurality of inhabited worlds, competitive tennis, infinity, solipsism and so on.
★ this is just.... pathetically wrong....
but there we were, unable even to mate as slum children would have so easily found an opportunity to do.
not even the cold blue water, under which we still clawed at each other, could bring relief.
claw at: scratch or tear at with the claws or fingernails.
the staid, elderly, lame gentleman, a Dr. Cooper, who that same summer courted my aunt
amid the sunny blur into which her lost loveliness graded
★ lost... all lost
the old man of the sea
★ the Hemingway book was published in 1952, no?
the maddeningly complex prospect of my past
★ prospect of my past...
The same June of the same year (1919) a stray canary had fluttered into her house and mine, in two widely separated countries. Oh, Lolita, had you loved me thus!
★ stray canary.... make it a butterfly.
I have reserved for the conclusion of my "Annabel" phase the account of our unsuccessful first tryst.
a nervous and slender-leaved mimosa grove
“神经质”,duh. here "mimosa" is of course chosen carefully, fittingly, by the author.
whenever in her solitary ecstasy
★ oh please. solitary indeeed.
the scepter of my passion
★ it's kind of corny... i suppose pr0n is difficult writing even for Nabokov
a sweetish, lowly, musky perfume
★ lowly means of low quality here, i think. it's supposed to be filched from the maid
In my sanitary relations with women I was practical, ironical and brisk. While a college student, in London and Paris, paid ladies sufficed me.
At first, I planned to take a degree in psychiatry and many manquè talents do; but I was even more manquè than that
★
I sat with uranists in the Deux Magots....I composed pastiches
★ uranian means queer. i remember N used "invert" somewhere else. pastiches, 集句,which is also of highly Nabokovian style
where pale pubescent girls with matted eyelashes could be stared at in perfect impunity remindful of that granted one in dreams.
★ Duh.
nymphets
★ 性感少女....it's okay i suppose... but just... boring. 小妖女?a tad too self conscious tho
look at the ugly dumplings in black stockings and white hats that are metamorphosed into stunning stars of the screen
a number of terrestrial women having pumpkins or pears for breasts
★ Nabokov is a mean, mean guy
The dimmest of my pollutive dreams was a thousand times more dazzling than all the adultery the most virile writer of genius or the most talented impotent might imagine.
★ mean AND narcissistic... i suppose those are prerequisites for being a writer?
Here is Virgil who could the nymphet sing in a single tone, but probably preferred a lad's perineum.
★ out came another~~
Here are some brides of ten compelled to seat themselves on the fascinum, the virile ivory in the temples of classical scholarship.
Thus isolated, thus removed, the vision acquired an especially keen charm that made me race with all speed toward my lone gratification.
★ nobody is running anywhere you know....

Also, any reader would become a slow reader if he is even remotely aware of Nabokov's "games."

Humbert Humbert, Vanessa Van Ness.
